Change your socks before your shoes: how often to replace running socks

You replace your running shoes on schedule. But what about your running socks? Most runners track shoe mileage to the mile. Then they pull on the same tired running socks for years.

Here's the thing: socks wear out too. And a worn pair undoes a lot of what your shoes do. Change your socks before your shoes — not the other way round.

Why old running socks let you down

Fresh socks do real work. They wick sweat, cushion pressure points and grip your foot. That grip stops the tiny slips that become blisters.

Over time, the yarn thins and the cushioning packs down. The elastic slackens, so the sock slides. Once it slides, you rub — and hotspots follow. Old cotton socks are the worst culprit; they hold water and chafe.

How often should you replace running socks?

As a rule of thumb, retire a regular pair every 6 to 12 months. Heavy mileage or hot, sweaty summers wear them out faster. Race-day socks earn a shorter life — keep those crisp.

The smarter fix is to rotate. Own four or five pairs and cycle through them. Each pair gets more rest, dries fully and lasts longer. Wash cool, air dry, and skip the tumble dryer.

Signs your running socks are done

The sign Why it matters
Thin or see-through patches The cushioning is gone. Blisters start here.
The sock slides or bunches The elastic has given up, so your foot rubs.
Flat, packed-down sole No more shock absorption underfoot.
Smell that won't wash out Bacteria have set into worn fibres.
Holes at heel or toe Bin them. No repair is worth a blister.

Spot one sign? Retire the pair. Spot two? They should have gone already.

Fresh pairs worth reaching for

Good news: a new pair costs far less than a new shoe. Here are three in-stock favourites.

The Balega Hidden Comfort (£15) is a plush, cushioned no-show. Its Drynamix yarn wicks sweat and resists blisters. Prefer a crew height? The Hoka Clifton Crew Sock (£15) adds arch support and mesh venting. For a light summer option, try the Feetures Elite Light Cushion (£15).
