Running Shop Near Peterborough

There is no specialist running shop in Peterborough. The nearest one is us, 42 Broad Street in Stamford, about 25 minutes up the A1 or 15 minutes on the train. Every week we fit runners from Werrington, Hampton, Orton, Bretton and the villages in between, and most of them say the same thing on the way out: they wish they had come sooner.

This page is for you if you are in Peterborough and wondering whether the trip is worth it. Here is what happens when you come, how to get here, and what to bring.

Why Peterborough runners come to Stamford

Because the shoes get fitted, not just sold. A gait analysis here is 45 minutes, one to one, on a treadmill, with someone who watches how you actually run before they bring anything off the wall. You try several pairs in the session and leave with the one that suits your feet, your mileage and the ground you run on. It costs £40, and £20 of that comes straight back as credit against any shoes you buy on the day.

The shoe wall is independent, which means we fit you to whatever works rather than whatever a brand wants us to push: Hoka, Brooks, Saucony, New Balance, Altra, Salomon, Inov8 and Topo, in road, trail and hybrid, with widths and half sizes that the big chains do not carry. If you have been told you need a wide fit, a stability shoe, or something for plantar fasciitis, this is where you find out whether that is true.

Getting here from Peterborough

By car. Take the A1 north from Peterborough and come off at Stamford. Around 25 minutes from the city centre, less from Werrington or Glinton. There is free street parking on Broad Street outside the shop, and the North Street car park is two minutes away on foot.

By train. Direct trains run from Peterborough to Stamford and take about 15 minutes. Stamford station is a ten-minute walk from the shop: over the bridge, up through the town centre, and Broad Street is at the top. Book a fitting for an hour after your train and you can be tried, fitted and back on the platform inside two hours.

When we are open. Monday to Friday 9:00 to 5:30, Saturday 8:30 to 5:00, Sunday 10:00 to 3:00. Seven days, so a Sunday morning after Ferry Meadows parkrun works.

What to bring

Your current running shoes, however worn, because the wear pattern tells us a lot. Something you can run in for a few minutes on the treadmill. Any insoles or orthotics you use. If you are training for something, the date and the distance. That is it.

Training for the Great Eastern Run?

Peterborough's half marathon comes round every October, and every September we see runners who have left their shoes until the last minute. If the race is on your calendar, get fitted with at least four weeks to go so you have time to break the shoes in. The same goes for anyone building towards a spring marathon: the long runs start in January, and the shoes need to be right before they do.

Book a fitting, or just come and look

You can book a gait analysis online and pick a slot that fits around the drive, or ring us on 01780 594165. If you would rather browse first, the shop is open seven days and nobody minds. Not sure what you are looking for? The shoe finder narrows it down in five questions before you set off.
